One former New York Yankee has already been signed by the Toronto Blue Jays, but it seems like there may be more in the works.
According to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith, Toronto has expressed interest in acquiring former Yankees slugger Gio Urshela and recently signed utility player Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
“They have shown some off-season interest in Amed Rosario and Gio Urshela, two players who offer similar skill sets, but it’s not clear how strong that interest is now that (Isiah Kiner-Falefa) is in place,” Nicholson-Smith stated. “At this stage, it’s more conceivable that the Blue Jays recruit three or four productive position players rather than planning their winter schedule around a single star.
“It is widely acknowledged that this was not plan A. However, Kiner-Falefa is crucial in raising this roster’s floor. The front staff now has to figure out how to increase the attacking potential of the lineup as well.”
Eight-year veteran Urshela played with the Yankees for three seasons, from 2019 to 2021. 2019 was his greatest season, hitting.314/.355/.534 in 132 games, driving in 74 runs, and hitting 21 home homers.
He played in 62 games during his 2023 campaign with the Los Angeles Angels. Urshela slashed, drove in 24 runs, and hit two home homers.299,.329,.374. During the previous season, the 32-year-old saw time with the Angels at first base, second base, shortstop, and third base.
Urshela may not end up with the Blue Jays, but it is certain that they have expressed interest in him.
