The Dolphins are making an uncommon group change at outside linebacker since they are missing their top three edge rushers due to season-ending injuries. Miami will acquire two additional edge defenders on Tuesday morning in addition to Justin Houston.
Tom Pelissero of NFL.com reports that Bruce Irvin has signed a contract with the Dolphins. He also says that Malik Reed will be returning to the organization. The latter had previously played for Miami earlier this year and was formerly a Vic Fangio component in Denver. Reed will be put to the practice squad, while Irvin will be added to Miami’s 53-man roster.
The Dolphins have lost Andrew Van Ginkel, Bradley Chubb, and Jaelan Phillips since Thanksgiving. This circumstance brings to mind Fangio’s time with the Broncos, when Von Miller and Chubb were seldom ever available together. But those Denver teams never made it to the postseason. The Dolphins are in a unique circumstance.
Irvin, who returned to the field this season as a Lions backup pass rusher, is a member of team No. 7. Irvin, 36, participated in two games after signing with the Lions practice squad in November. The former first-round pick of the Seahawks had a sack when he was a P-squad elevation. December saw the Lions’ departure. Irvin passed waivers and has been waiting for another opportunity, much like Houston. The special situation facing the Dolphins will supply it.
In the latter years of his career, Irvin has developed a tendency of arriving in-season. Midway through November 2021, the 12-year veteran signed a new contract with the Seahawks, then rejoined the Bears in mid-October 2022. Although Irvin and Fangio had never met before, the former did study with Fangio’s protégé Clint Hurtt in Seattle last
