ROME, GA (BP) — This Thursday at Shorter University, there will be a celebration focused on the last year’s accomplishments and the future ahead. Former Georgia coach and recent inductee of the Hall of Fame Mark Richt will be the keynote speaker.
The university’s President’s Gala, which will take place on December 7 at the Winthrop-King Centre, is a yearly occasion that supports student scholarships and boasts speakers like community leaders and former baseball great Darryl Strawberry. Additionally, attendees will hear from Shorter President Don Dowless.
As of 1 p.m. Eastern time on December 4, there were still a few seats available through the Georgia Baptist Convention-affiliated Shorter University.
After taking the Bulldogs to their first SEC title in twenty years in his second season as head coach at UGA in 2001, Richt began his eighteen-year tenure there. Georgia would win five SEC East titles and another SEC championship during his leadership, and Richt would win two SEC Coach of the Year awards.
Richt’s alma mater, the University of Miami, was the location of his second head coaching position. He capped his career at No. 2 in the national rankings during a breakout season in 2017 by leading the Hurricanes to their first ACC Coastal championship.
When Florida State graduate assistant coach Bobby Bowden addressed eternal concerns in the wake of a player’s gunshot death, Richt’s life was forever altered at the start of his career.
Days before taking on his mentor as a coach in the Sugar Bowl, Richt told BP in 2002 that “Coach Bowden talked about his own faith, where he had assurance of salvation, eternal life with Christ in heaven.”
The two made an appearance together at the NAMB Send Luncheon during the SBC Annual Meeting in Nashville, nearly 20 years later.
