Chris Wilder singles out one summer signing he “would definitely” have gone for

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder expressed his confidence in Tom Davies, the former Everton midfielder, following his return to the first team last Saturday.

Davies’ late substitute appearance provided a small consolation in the midst of another disappointing result for Sheffield United’s season—a crushing 5-0 defeat at home against Aston Villa.

This match marked Davies’ first competitive appearance since September 30th. The midfielder, who arrived on a three-year deal from Goodison Park ahead of the season, had been sidelined due to a freak thigh injury sustained during a training session.

Speaking about the midfielder in a recent interview, Wilder said:

“He’s somebody that, if I was here at the start of the season, I would definitely have gone for as well. He’s just had an unfortunate injury in a ridiculous situation.

“To get him back will be great with his Premier League experience, calmness, and most importantly, he’s a really good player that wanted to come here and wants to do well here.”

Out of all the permanent transfers in the summer, you could probably name only Tom Davies as someone that would definitely be a successful signing, but unfortunately a number of injuries has seen him limited to just four substitute appearances in the Premier League, averaging just under 20 minutes per appearance.

Although he’s still at a youngish age of 25, the former Everton man brings a plethora of top-flight experience, and with the injuries that’s something the Blades have missed out on in the first half of the campaign. And unfortunately it may be too late for him to make any impact
