Despite putting on a strong display at Anfield on Saturday, the Clarets were defeated 3-1 by the league leaders.
Vincent Kompany’s team missed three excellent opportunities to tie the score again in the second half, with the game hovering around 2-1.
Even if Burnley didn’t get the desired outcome, Berge thinks his team has now established a level that they must meet in order to finish the season.
“We had a great start,” the midfield player said to Clarets.
“We were on it, we had a solid formation, we handled their long balls, we won second balls, and we advanced, managing to generate overloads and penetrate the middle. From the beginning, we appeared menacing.
They obviously scored their first goal, but that didn’t stop us from fighting back; instead, we displayed the fortitude and passion required to face down such a formidable opponent. Overall, we were deserving of a 1-1 lead at the half because to a fantastic set piece and header by Dara O’Shea.
“We emerge in the second half, and they are clearly vying for it. They score the opening goal, about which you may debate more, but we responded with power and boldness, winning second balls, setting up two or three tremendous opportunities, and we were just barely able to tie the game at 2-2. Then they use the 3-1 to punish us.
However, I believe that the spirit—which is evident in the away supporters—was partly a result of our performance on the field.
“That was a legitimate team there. We fought for ourselves and prevailed in our conflicts. The boys’ effort and behavior both on and off the ball make me proud of them.
“This is how it needs to be every week; after that, we need to make sure everything works, score those goals, and avoid giving them away.”
