The New York Yankees continue to add to the bullpen. New York acquired reliever Lou Trivino in a trade with the Oakland Athletics in 2022 and he shined. The righty had a 1.66 ERA in 25 appearances with the Yankees and a 22-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
He seemed like he was going to have a solid role with the club in 2023, but suffered an elbow strain and underwent Tommy John surgery, and missed the entire season. He eventually was non-tendered by the Yankees after the 2023 season came to an end.
While this is the case, he will be back in New York in 2024. He arrived at Spring Training on Wednesday leading many to speculate that a deal was on the way. This was true, and Trivino officially signed a one-year big league contract with a team option for the 2025 campaign, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.
“Now official: Yanks sign Trivino to a one-year Major League contract for the 2024 season with a club option for 2025,” Hoch said.
It’s unclear exactly when Trivino will be ready to return to the mound, but it’s clear he will help the Yankees. Trivino has a career 3.86 ERA in 285 games with a 299-to-130 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
New York lost Wandy Peralta and Keynan Middleton in free agency and has been looking to replenish the bullpen. The Yankees had the best bullpen in baseball last season and should have one of the best in 2024 again.
