According to Bristol Live, George Friend is likely to leave Bristol Rovers at the end of the current campaign and will take on a senior recruitment post.
The 36-year-old left defender signed a one-year contract with Rovers last summer, but he has only made 12 appearances so far this season due to injury.
With 508 games played in all four Football League divisions for his permanent clubs, Birmingham City, Middlesbrough, Doncaster Rovers, Wolves, and Exeter City, as well as loan stints at Scunthorpe United, Millwall, and Southend United in addition to his current position with the Gas, Friend’s experience has been invaluable, but his on-field production hasn’t lived up to expectations.
The defender is now out due to an ankle injury and was last seen in the team’s 2-1 loss to Burton Albion two weeks ago. It is unclear if he will play again this season or declare his retirement before the end of the campaign.
Since former Head of Football Operations Eddy Jennings left in November, there have been many questions about who is in charge of Rovers’ hiring, especially during the January transfer window. Chris Spend love, the Chief Scout who was hired by former manager Joey Barton in March 2022, is thought to have played a major part in the club’s recruiting.
Furthermore, with six loanees already on the books and 13 players whose contracts are due to expire at the conclusion of the season, the forthcoming summer transfer window is predicted to be chaotic with a considerable number of departures expected.
