The Texans are in a great position to sign a top running back in the undrafted class.

With Josh Jacobs, Saquon Barkley, and other players expected to hit the open market, the Houston Texans will have multiple choices when it comes to signing a top running back in free agency.

INDIA — When it comes to the running back market this spring during free agency, the Houston Texans will have a number of alternatives. Josh Jacobs and Saquon Barkley will be free agents on March 15 after their respective teams decide not to apply a franchise tag, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Houston is going to be chasing a highly desirable running back. This off-season, coach DeMeco Ryans said that enhancing Houston’s rushing offense would be a “significant” goal following the Texans’ Divisional Round loss to the Baltimore Ravens in January.

Barkley seems to be the highlight in a running back class full with talent. Furthermore, he is a favorite to sign with the Texans, according to multiple publications. The two-time All-Pro running back would be a huge upgrade at the position for Houston.

Over the course of his six seasons in the NFL, Barkley has amassed over 1,000 yards in rushing. He was 38 yards short of reaching the milestone in 2023. After completing his sixth season with the New York Giants, Barkley amassed 962 yards and six touchdowns through 247 rushes.

Barkley also has the adaptable abilities required for the passing game. He hauled in 46 passes for 280 yards and four scores in the previous season.

However, Jacobs will serve as a valuable backup should the Texans fail to get Barkley.

Barkley and the former All-Pro running back are similar in every way. Jacobs, a running back with the Las Vegas Raiders, just finished a season in which he gained 805 yards on 233 carries and scored six touchdowns. Along with it, he recorded 37 receptions for 296 yards.
