The KC Royals announced the selection of two other new members just one day after breaking the thrilling news that Bo Jackson will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The day before Jackson’s induction ceremony takes place on June 28, Cedric Tallis, the original owner Ewing Kauffman’s pick to be the team’s first general manager, and John Schuerholz, the GM who was instrumental in bringing the 1985 World Series championship trophy to Kansas City, will be enshrined.
When Tallis took over the new club in 1968, he managed its initial construction, which resulted in the Royals’ historic victory on Opening Day in 1969. Tallis led the Royals to two consecutive second-place finishes in the American League West before stepping down as general manager following the 1974 season.
After working with Tallis, Schuerholz—who is inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame—ascended to General Manager in late 1981. Schuerholz led the celebration when the Royals defeated St. Louis in seven games to win the ’85 Fall Classic, one year after his team narrowly missed the 1984 World Series due to a loss to Detroit in the ALCS. As the team’s Vice Chairman Emeritus, he left Kansas City in 1990 to take the GM position in Atlanta. It was under his leadership that the incredible Atlanta clubs that won the 1995 World Series and 14 consecutive National League East Division titles were put together.
Is Nick Pratto still knocking on KC’s roster door?
It’s a simple question, and the answer is “yes.” Pratto, who has struggled at the plate in his two seasons with the Royals, finished the game with two hits and four runs scored on Thursday afternoon as the team defeated Arizona 6-0 in the Cactus League. His spring line increased to.414/.452/.690 as a result of the effort, which also put him in the running for a spot on the Opening Day roster.
Houston demotes former KC Royals reliever
Dylan Coleman, who has spent parts of the last three seasons in the Kansas City bullpen, has not had a good spring training. Coleman was optioned by the Astros to Triple-A Sugar Land on Wednesday after he gave up seven runs and eight walks in 4.1 innings.
After playing 96 games for the Royals and going 5-4 with a 3.88 ERA, Coleman was moved to Houston in December in exchange for pitcher Carlos Mateo.
Division rival deals away star starting pitcher
A sigh of relief might be felt by fans tired of the ceaseless rumors linking, or attempting to link, White Sox starter Dylan Cease to club after team. On Wednesday, the Sox dealt Cease to San Diego in exchange for three prospects and major league pitcher Steve Wilson.
When Kansas City plays in the American League Central Division, will they miss Cease? He was, sort of, not that dominant versus the Royals, going 5-4 with a 3.40 ERA in 15 career starts.
