Sad News;Former West Brom player died at 90

Gerry Summers, a former player for West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United, passed away at the age of 90.
Sheffield United has honored the former defender who went away on March 13, 2023. The club issued the following statement: “All at Sheffield United are saddened to learn of the passing of the last member of one of the greatest defences ever to grace the Bramall Lane turf, and his name was Gerry Summers.”

“Gerry was a classy player,” it continued. He was a big crowd favorite in S2, two-footed, and considered the “brains of the side” by [United goalkeeping hero Alan] Hodgkinson, who also had the flair to match his cool head.

Summers made his breakthrough while playing for West Bromwich Albion. He was born in Birmingham in 1933. He joined Sheffield United in 1957 and played a key role in the team’s promotion struggle during his seven-year tenure of 305 games. Summers later joined Walsall and then Hull City.

e decided to become a coach, landing his first job at Oxford United. Summers managed Gillingham alongside his old Sheffield United colleague Hodgkinson. Summers was a Gillingham manager who worked with players like Steve Bruce.
