sad news;Nebraska head coach terminates his contract due to…

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule hit on a number of football topics ahead of the start of spring ball.

Yes, there was plenty of Trev Alberts and big-picture talk with Nebraska football a week way from officially starting spring practices.

There will be time to cover that, but let’s hit on some of the football items that came out of Matt Rhule’s 35-minute media session on Monday.

— Rhule said there’s an added sense of urgency around the program this spring that will be stoked by more competition in practices. Rhule said that means more scrimmaging, more opportunities to play in game situations, and the offshoot of that means more reps for the Huskers’ trio of scholarship quarterbacks. Rhule said Nebraska doesn’t need to make wholesale changes from last season, just find a few extra plays per game.

— Rhule said Nebraska’s roster has more talent parity this season than a year ago. Last season, Rhule said Nebraska had more top-end talent balanced by players who needed more seasoning. That isn’t as much the case this season.

— Nebraska’s trio of scholarship quarterbacks Heinrich Haarberg, Dylan Raiola and Daniel Kaelin have done a nice job of working so far in the offseason. Haarberg has been working during the spring break to get his elbow up in his throwing motion.

“They’re both winners,” Rhule said of the freshmen quarterbacks.

— This is team commitment week for the program, where players go through a number of off-the-field competitions ahead of the start of spring ball next week. Rhule said one reason they are starting spring ball later is so that there’s not as much dead time at the end of the spring and in May.
