Knicks Floated as Trade Destination for $91 Million Wing

The New York Knicks have the tools necessary to improve. They could use the first-round selections they have accumulated to acquire additional enhancements. Mikal Bridges of the Brooklyn Nets is one potential boost.

In an April 8 story, Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report outlined why Bridges would enhance what the Knicks have already constructed.

With his outside shooting to complement Donte DiVincenzo’s, Brunson would have plenty of room to maneuver for drives. Additionally, Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau would instantly take a shine to him thanks to his versatile defense.

Bailey went on to say that Bridges might replace another Knicks star and that his contract would be less expensive than that of other NBA players.

Additionally, Bridges probably won’t cost as much as Giannis or Mitchell. Bojan Bogdanović and a sizable portion of the Knicks’ extensive draft roster might make it happen. That might let the front office to decide against re-signing OG Anunoby in free agency if they are worried about his lack of durability.

Bridges and the Nets have a four-year, $91 million contract that is currently in its second year. When the Nets first got Bridges, they thought he would be a key player for the team going forward. But in addition to the Nets missing the playoffs, Bridges has averaged 20 points per game while shooting 37.3% from three and 43.8% from the field.

Josh Hart Calls Mikal Bridges ‘Squiward’ in Meme

Hart made fun of Bridges after the Knicks defeated the Nets on March 23 while drawing comparisons between the Knicks and the Nets. He even went so far as to liken Bridges to a key figure from the well-known Spongebob Squarepants cartoon on Nickelodeon.

Following the victory, Hart reportedly said to reporters, “It’s like that SpongeBob meme when Squidward is looking out the window and he sees Spongebob and Patrick having fun,” according to New York Daily News. “This is Squidward, Mikal.”

The Knicks, who are 46-32 and have a shot at the No. 2 seed, have unquestionably had a better season than the 31-48 Nets. Although the season has not gone as expected for them, the Nets have not wavered in their determination to retain Bridges.

Bridges and Hart have a connection because Villanova is their alma mater, and they played college ball together. Plenty of Villanova alumni, including Donte DiVincenzo and Jalen Brunson, also play for the Knicks. It would truly be a college reunion, though it may not happen if the Knicks want to keep Anunoby.

OG Anunoby Predicted to Stay With Knicks

Since being acquired by the Knicks from the Toronto Raptors, Anunoby has contributed to the team’s success.

Kristopher Knoc of Bleacher Report projected that Anunoby and the Knicks would consent to a postponement.

Financially speaking, Anunoby would be better off opting out and using his leverage for a long-term deal. Anunoby was acquired by the Knicks in December via trades of R.J. Barrett and Immanuel Quickley, so losing him a few months later would be terrible, Knox wrote in an article published on April 7.

Knox was cautious as well, but he made it apparent that they might have to extend him nevertheless because there aren’t any other options.

“The Knicks might prefer to see Anunoby for another season before committing to him long-term, but they may not have that option. For better or worse, Anunoby’s next payday will likely come from New York.”

If that’s the route they take, acquiring Mikal Bridges could be out of the question.
