Journalist confirms LA Galaxy to seal a signing with Athletico star

Two MLS teams, including LA Galaxy, are reportedly considering the possibility of acquiring 35-year-old midfielder Axel Witsel from Atletico Madrid for the 2018 campaign, according to the Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo. Inter Miami is the other club under consideration.

According to the previously mentioned source, both offers would be financially and geographically alluring to the player, thus Witsel would have to decide whether to seek prospects in the US or continue his career in Europe.

LA Galaxy wants pre-contract deal with Atletico Madrid star

Axel Witsel is one of the six players from Atletico Madrid whose contract expires on June 30th. At 35 years old, he has become a key figure for Diego Simeone, albeit not in his natural position as a midfielder but rather as a center-back, where he has excelled to the point of being the team’s best defender this season.

Mundo Deportivo also highlights Witsel’s significance to the Atletico Madrid squad, having already featured in 42 matches this season. Only Jan Oblak has spent more time on the field than him, underscoring his importance to coach Diego Simeone.

Indeed, from our standpoint, LA Galaxy could greatly benefit from a player like Witsel. Specifically, a defensive-minded player, whether operating as a pivot or a center-back. If he fits well, this could significantly alleviate the defensive transition struggles faced by the Galaxy.
