Chargers’ reveals exactly which WR the team will sign

Wide receiver is possibly the most pressing necessity for the LA Chargers as a whole. The Chargers have one of the worst wide receiver rooms in the league for one of the finest quarterbacks after trading for Keenan Allen and cutting Mike Williams.

Joshua Palmer, Quentin Johnston, and Derius Davis are the main players in a room in dire need of assistance. Undoubtedly, Los Angeles will select a receiver early in the 2024 NFL Draft, but that selection by itself most likely won’t be sufficient. This team requires additional assistance.

Though the Chargers haven’t changed, there are a number of intriguing wide outs available who, on paper, would seem to fit in well with the squad. For months, the Bolts have been in desperate need of a wide receiver, but LA has not strengthened the squad by bringing in a seasoned player in free agency.

The Bolts’ lack of action is telling. The Chargers may have accidentally disclosed who they plan to add to the receiving group in order to support a rookie receiver by going this long without signing a wide out.

Chargers’ inactivity points the arrow directly at Tyler Boyd

Considering how long it is taking the Chargers to actually act, Tyler Boyd appears to be the most likely receiver that the team will sign.Since Boyd and the Bolts have previously been linked, it is more likely that he will join the team the longer this process takes.

The Chargers have the option to sign a number of additional free agents, but they are all similar. Players like Michael Gallup, Hunter Renfrow, and Odell Beckham Jr. were all cut by their teams, thus they don’t factor into the 2025 compensatory calculation.

Boyd’s contract with the Cincinnati Bengals merely expired, thus that is not the case. The Chargers would receive less picks in the following draft if they signed Boyd to a contract today since it would be taken into account in the compensatory pick calculation.

Still, there’s a catch. In the event that Boyd signs with the Chargers after the 2024 NFL Draft, his signing will be excluded from the compensatory methodology. There are now no restrictions on the Chargers’ ability to sign any of the other three elite receivers. But it’s better to wait with Boyd.
