Unbelievable: Orlando Pirates qualifies to Caf Champions League spot

WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates failed to capitalize on Stellenbosch’s 2-0 loss against Moroka Swallows in the Premier Soccer League outing after falling by a solitary goal to Richards Bay.

With two rounds left to conclude the season, the 2024/25 Caf Champions League fate is not in Bucs’ hands now.

Coach Jose Riveiro knows that, but he has promised the best from his squad in their last two games, and hopes their rivals falter to help them finish behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

  • WHAT RIVEIRO SAID

“We have two finals on Saturday in Mbombela against TS Galaxy and one here at Orlando Stadium against SuperSport United. We lost the first one against Richards Bay,” Riveiro stated at a press conference.

“We have to give it everything we have since we are fighting for a very significant goal for the team. The most crucial thing was that we had the right mindset and the drive to win the three points, even though there are still many areas we need to work on from our game against Richards Bay.

“We know we are competing for a significant prize, therefore we are going to approach the upcoming final with the same motivation and mindset. Although Stellenbosch is currently in the Champions League, we hope to be there the following season,” he continued.

“We all know that in order to reach our goal, we must go above and beyond. This applies to all parties engaged, including the players and technical staff. It can only be accomplished in that manner.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In his first season at the team, Riveiro assisted Bucs in securing a spot in the Caf Champions League. However, Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana defeated them in the second round.
The Soweto Giants will compete in the 2024–25 Caf Confederation Cup if they are unable to place second.

    WHAT NEXT?

Before the game against the Rockets, who are also vying for a spot in the CAF, Riveiro needs to make sure his players are rested.

With 40 points, Galaxy is in fifth place and has a great opportunity of taking fourth place in the standings.
