Talented Ruby Moores has been riding a BMX since she was three

A 12-year-old girl from Goldenhill is now of the best BMX riders in the world. Ruby Moores, 12, competed in Glasgow at the BMX World Championships achieving world number five.

The competition took place on Tuesday, August 8. Talented Ruby has been riding a BMX since she was three, and trains at least one to two hours each day.

he Ormiston Horizon pupil is also the granddaughter of 70s Stoke City player, Ian Moores, as is her football-mad brother, Bradley, seven.

Proud dad Mike, 33, said: “It’s really good what she’s been able to achieve. She has been doing it for a number of years and lots of success previously.

“It is a really tough age group – we know most of the girls personally and there were some from Columbia, America and Australia.”

As the age groups go on your birthday, and Ruby’s birthday is in December, she was one of the youngest in her age group.

Mike continued: “It’s an amazing achievement for her. We are still buzzing.”

Ruby got into BMX biking when a neighbour saw her on a balance bike in Bathpool and suggested the idea.

Mike said: “She had seen her riding it really fast and that’s how she got into racing. It’s something that she thought she would enjoy.

“About a month later there was a race in Manchester and there were really young kids racing bikes. Ruby got third place and it all started from there.

“She goes to the training centre in Manchester two times a week. For the last two or three months she rides her bike for one or two hours everyday to make sure she’s as prepared as she can be.

“She goes to different tracks in Manchester, Crewe and Derby. She puts in the hours training.

“Even if you have a month off you get left behind. This is doable as long as you have the support of your family and me and my partner take her to sessions.

It’s the same with any other kid in sport. They train during the week and compete at weekends. Next for her will be the British BMX Championships in Derby in a fortnight.

“She may also be able to make the national championships in September where she will be racing 14-year-olds.”
