In Monza, Kevin Magnussen received a one-race ban for reaching the maximum 12 penalty points on his super license. The Danish driver had been sitting on 10 points for most of the season, and with his ‘hard racing style’, a ban was looming.

Many drivers collect a few penalty points throughout a season but never reach twelve due to them being removed after a year. Magnussen, however, had racked up 10 points in just six rounds of racing.

The final incident that pushed the Dane over the threshold was relatively mild, an overtake with Pierre Gasly’s Alpine that went awry. Despite the benign nature of the incident, Magnussen became the first driver to receive a race ban under the current system.
