Buffalo, New York Brendon Perlini of the Detroit Red Wings suffered a serious gash to his nose after being smacked in the face by Sabres defenseman Henri Jokiharju’s skate during Tuesday’s game in Buffalo.

Perlini needed sutures, according to the Red Wings, and his readiness to play again was in doubt.

For a while, Perlini was face down before team trainers attended to him. He was then lifted to his feet and given a towel to cover his face as he exited the rink and entered the locker room.

With 3:51 left in the first period, there was a collision along the boards in the neutral zone. Jokiharju ran into Perlini while he was handling the puck. Jokiharju’s skate flew back as the two fell, appearing to strike Perlin across the right cheek before first removing his helmet.
