Iroegbunam made a strong preseason impression at Walsall, and it seemed as though he may play a significant squad part for us this year, but an injury in that game knocked him back, and he has since been healing and making progress.

Emery has frequently mentioned the excellent midfielder in his team news updates, indicating that he sees him having a role to play for us this season in the first team even though he only recently begun group training with the senior squad.

In turn, having participated for an hour for the U21s, it’s encouraging to know that he is getting closer to returning to peak form and will hopefully be vying for a spot at the senior level sooner rather than later.

In terms of the system and style of play under Emery, Iroegbunam possesses the traits to be a good fit for our midfield thanks to his technical prowess, physicality, athleticism, and passing range.

Although his injury was probably a major factor, the fact that Iroegbunam has stayed and hasn’t been loaned out would suggest that he’ll get a chance to stake his claim now too. Neither Youri Tielemans nor Leander Dendoncker have made a significantly positive impression when coming into the Villa XI thus far this season.

While his loan stint at QPR last season will have been a crucial time in his development, there were encouraging signs when he made his debut under Steven Gerrard. Hopefully, when given the chance to play once more in a Villa shirt this season, that talent will show itself.
