Attempts by a new deputy mayor to accelerate downtown revitalization and entice Commanders back to DC

Nina Albert was chosen by the mayor to fill the position after John Falcicchio was forced to leave after it was discovered that he had sexually harassed two employees.

In an effort to entice the Washington Commanders back to the District, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has appointed a former Biden administration official to head her initiatives to boost the downtown economy and seize control of the vacant RFK Stadium complex.

The new deputy mayor for planning and economic development was chosen as Bowser’s office works to improve its reputation for workplace culture.

Nina Albert has extensive experience working for the federal and District of Columbia governments; most recently, she was in charge of the huge real estate portfolio of the federal government at the General Services Administration.

“I’ve known [Acting] Deputy Mayor Albert over a number of years, from my service on the [D.C.] Council to now,” Bowser stated. “And I’ve followed her career path in a variety of organizations that provide various forms of support for the District. And I was overjoyed that we were successful in luring her back to Washington, D.C.

At a time when downtown Washington, D.C., like many other cities, is still recovering from the pandemic and thousands of government and commercial sector employees are still working from home, she is ready to take over as deputy mayor for economic development. Albert must still be confirmed.

“I actually think that having worked for the federal government, and GSA in particular, is a great benefit to the District of Columbia,” Albert stated. “I understand how the process that they’re going through [works], to figure out how to consolidate federal real estate, but I’ve always had the advantage of also understanding the District, which is my home, and how to marry those two agendas together to really come up with a vibrant, dynamic downtown.”

In order to give Washington, D.C., complete responsibility of the RFK site, Albert will also be tasked with aiding in negotiations with Congress and the federal government.
