Cliff Robinson, who spent four of his eighteen NBA seasons playing for the Phoenix Suns, passed away on Saturday at the age of 53, according to a statement from his alma mater, UConn.
His death’s specifics were not immediately known.
Robinson, who was mainly a forward for the Suns from 1997 to 2001, averaged 16.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 1.0 blocks in 33.2 minutes per game.
Rex Chapman and Steve Nash, two former Suns teammates, tweeted about him early on Saturday morning.
In his message, Chapman wrote, “Devastated with the passing of one of the best teammates ever, Clifford Robinson.”
Nash sent Chapman a quote-tweet complimenting Robinson on his teamwork.
“This aches. AMAZING teammate, Cliffy, with whom I have wonderful memories of beginning my career.
Robinson’s career peaked while he was a member of the Portland Trail Blazers. In addition to making the 1994 All-Star game and being selected to two NBA All-Defensive second teams, he was named the 1993 Sixth Man of the Year.
Robinson was a player for the Golden State Warriors, New Jersey Nets, and Detroit Pistons. Among all NBA players, he has played the 14th-most games with 1,380.
In 2007, he was selected for the All-Century men’s basketball team at UConn and received the ring of honor.
The university posted a message on Twitter stating, “The UConn Basketball family mourns the loss of a legendary player and person, Clifford Robinson.” “During this trying time, our thoughts and prayers are with Cliff’s family.”
