In addition to losing to the New York Giants, the Washington Commanders also lost because All-Pro special teams player Jeremy Reaves revealed he would need season-ending surgery.
IN RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSY — In Week 7, the Washington Commanders faced the New York Giants and lost 14–7, but they had a lot of fans cheering them on.
None of them, though, was arguably more involved than safety Jeremy Reaves, who was at home recovering from an injury that put him on injured reserve and watching his Commanders struggle through their fourth loss of the season.
Reaves revealed on Sunday night that he will miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury.
“It all starts with reflection…During my journey, I have discovered that the mountain has two sides. “Achieving one peak simply signals the beginning of another climb to an even higher one,” Reaves wrote on social media. “I regretfully have to cut this year short due to surgery I have scheduled for tomorrow morning, but despite this, I am thankful! The Lord has given me teammates, an incredible network of support, and the will to keep going after failure! I have had more moments at the top of the mountain than I have had to climb. Thus, this is nothing new.
Reaves also expressed gratitude to the supporters who have stood by him both during his recovery from the injury and as he has become one of the team’s most beloved players.
Reaves, who joined the NFL as an undrafted free agent, takes great satisfaction in having earned every moment he has spent on the field.
His time paid off last season as he was selected to the Pro Bowl for special teams and made the First Team All-Pro, two firsts in his career.
And after being chosen as the team captain by his peers, he achieved yet another first this season.
In addition, Reaves dedicated a portion of Friday night to pleading with supporters to show his Washington teammates more love and support in spite of the team’s most recent heartbreaking defeat.
Reaves responded to criticism by saying, “Negative reactions to everything don’t create positive reactions.” “Just doesn’t work like that.”
Reaves’ season is now officially, if not officially, over, and he will now start the arduous process of recovering with the goal of playing in the NFL again in 2024.
Though he only had a one-year contract going into the season, a number of things, including how the rest of the season plays out, could mean that he doesn’t spend his next with the Commanders.
A 3-5 record halfway through the season and three straight NFC East Divisional losses don’t look good for anyone’s future with Washington, and with the 6-1 Philadelphia Eagles visiting next weekend, it’s possible that Reaves’ season is coming to an end in addition to his poor start to the team.
