John McCarthy, a player for the Port Adelaide Football Club, passed away in Las Vegas, the club has revealed.
Keith Thomas, the chief executive of the Port Adelaide Football Club, reported that McCarthy, 22, passed away while on vacation with ten other Port Adelaide players at the end of the season.
The club is aware that early on Monday morning, McCarthy fell from the balcony of a high-rise hotel, which is thought to be The Flamingo.
McCarthy was not staying at The Flamingo with his teammates, who departed for the United States on Saturday.
McCarthy, according to Thomas, was not with any of his teammates when he passed away.
After speaking with Victorian police, Thomas stated, “We understand there were witnesses on the ground at the incident but have no details.”
Travis Boak, Matthew Broadbent, Alipate Carlile, Brett Ebert, Hamish Hartlett, Tom Logan, Andrew Moore, Paul Stewart, Jackson Trengove, and Justin Westhoff were the other Port players in Las Vegas.
Thomas claimed he had to give the news of McCarthy’s passing over the phone to the other ten players in Las Vegas.
“It was a great shock, very emotional and they are making arrangements to come back now,” he stated.
In a statement released earlier today, The Flamingo stated that around 5.40 a.m. local time (10.40 p.m. AEST), a man was discovered deceased next to its south entrance.
“He was transported to the University Medical Centre of Las Vegas, where he was pronounced deceased,” according to a spokesperson.
After being drafted in 2007, McCarthy participated in 39 AFL games, including 18 for Collingwood.
McCarthy was selected by Port Adelaide in the 2012 Pre-season Draught after being delisted by the Magpies following the 2011 campaign.
The agile midfielder established himself as a fixture at Port Adelaide, appearing in 21 matches for the Power during the 2012 campaign.
“John was a very popular player and embraced the club as we embraced him,” stated Thomas.
“His goal upon joining our football team was to rekindle his career.
“He started like a bomb, looked fantastic and we had great hopes for him.”
Thomas stated that at approximately 9.30 am, the club was notified of the incident, which is presently under investigation.
McCarthy’s identity was kept a secret until Monday afternoon in order to notify his relatives of the tragic event.

Thomas stated that the primary cause of the delay was attempting to notify Matt, McCarthy’s brother, who was also on vacation abroad.
According to Thomas, Matt McCarthy, who played for Geelong alongside his father Shane, was informed just minutes prior to the news conference.
General manager of Port Adelaide Peter Rohde is en route to the United States to join the other Power players who are on their way.
According to Thomas, Rohde is probably going to get in touch with McCarthy’s sister, who lives in the US, to arrange for the return of his remains to Australia.
“Clearly there is an investigation going on, so it could be several days,” said Thomas.
