‘Get your hands on him!’ his trade work out well for but parties

The Chiefs and Dolphins will meet on Sunday in Frankfurt, Germany, and there will be a lot of talk about Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill meeting his previous team for the first time.

Hill was moved to Miami in the 2022 offseason for five draft picks – 2022 first-, second-, and fourth-round picks, as well as 2023 fourth- and sixth-round picks. Hill’s absence did not prevent the Chiefs from winning the Super Bowl last year, and the departure of Patrick Mahomes had little effect on Hill’s output, as he had 119 catches for 1,710 yards and seven scores since joining the Dolphins.

The Chiefs are 6-2 this season, and Hill is on track to establish a new receiving yardage record, so Year Two should be exciting.

The Chiefs are 6-2 this season, and Hill is on track to establish a new receiving yardage record, so Year Two post-trade is off to a terrific start. That’s why Chiefs owner Clark Hunt described the arrangement as a win-win situation on Tuesday.

“I think it was a trade that worked out well for both parties,” Hunt told KSHB. “Obviously, Tyreek is an incredible player who has done extremely well with the Dolphins, but I believe it also benefited the Chiefs.” The draft compensation that we received, a large portion of that draft capital was used to develop our defense, and I believe that it worked out nicely this year. We have a lot of incredibly talented young defensive players, many of whom came from that transaction.”

Whether through the original picks or trades involving them, the Chiefs have picked up cornerback Trent McDuffie, wide receiver Skyy Moore, offensive lineman Darian Kinnard, wide receiver Rashee Rice, defensive tackle Keondre Coburn, and a 2024 fifth-round pick. Those players have had varying levels of success with McDuffie and Moore playing key roles on the title team.

Sunday’s result won’t change much in the big-picture analysis of the trade, but it could help set the stage for a playoff rematch that would continue the long history between the Chiefs and Hill.
