See you next year’ after leaving on cart with knee injury

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was carted off from Sunday’s game against the Washington Football Team with a knee injury that he later indicated he believes will rule him out for the remainder of the season.

On a third-and-2 play in the third quarter, Burrow was hit low by Jonathan Allen and high by Montez Sweat after throwing an incompletion intended for wide receiver Tyler Boyd. Burrow clutched his left knee before being leaving on a cart.

Players from both teams surrounded Burrow to show support as the quarterback was being loaded onto the cart and taken away.

Cincinnati ruled Burrow out for the remainder of the game shortly after the injury.

Burrow did not reveal the exact nature of his injury but said “see ya next year” in a tweet later on Sunday.

Burrow’s initial diagnosis, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, is a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Bengals coach Zac Taylor did not provide a timetable for Burrow’s rehabilitation following his team’s 20-9 loss.

“The players have responded to him, the coaches have responded to him, the city has responded to him and all that is equally as important,” Taylor said in a statement. “He energises this group. He’s been a fantastic player, everything we anticipated he’d be, and we’ll get him back eventually. We’re not sure when that will be.”

Burrow finished with 203 yards and one touchdown on 22-of-34 passing.

Cincinnati went with second-year quarterback Ryan Finley, who started three games last season after veteran Andy Dalton was benched. In the Bengals’ 20-9 loss, Finley completed three of ten passes for 30 yards and one interception.

Burrow was the first overall choice in the NFL draft in April after a record-breaking, Heisman Trophy-winning senior season at LSU.
“He showed that he was mentally ready to go right from the get-go,” Taylor went on to say. “He’s given us a chance in the majority of these games.” He’s done all he could in the fourth quarter to wear us down, and sometimes we just don’t get the win. We have a lot of faith in Joe, and once he returns, we’ll be ready for him.”
