Report: 49ers have shown interest of the star before deadline

Report: 49ers showed trade interest in Brian Burns before deadline originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area.

Prior to the NFL’s Oct. 31 trade deadline, the 49ers were interested in a number of pass rushers.

The 49ers made a splash by obtaining defensive end Chase Young in a trade with the Washington Commanders, but the team was apparently looking for another name on the market.

However, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who cited sources, the 49ers and Chicago Bears both had interest in Carolina Panthers star outside linebacker Brian Burns before obtaining pass rushers in separate deals with the Commanders.

The Panthers were also approached by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and Baltimore Ravens about Burns, according to Schefter, and Carolina was quick to shut off any and all trade talks involving its defensive standout.

The 2019 first-round pick has five sacks, ten quarterback hits, eight tackles for loss, 21 total tackles, and one forced fumble in seven games with Carolina this season. Burns is coming off a career-high 12.5 sack season in 16 games with the Panthers in 2022.

Burns is in the final year of his rookie deal and will be a free agent at the end of the 2023 season.

While Burns is a stronger all-around player than Young, the 49ers may still be pleased with their deadline purchase after reinforcing an already frightening defensive line that now includes two Ohio State products in Young and reigning Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa.
