The Miami Dolphins have appeared to be a viable Super Bowl contender at times over the last two seasons, but the majority of their success has come against below-average competition. One bizarre statistic sums up the Dolphins’ problems against excellent teams.
The Dolphins last defeated an opponent with a record greater than.500 in Week 3 of last season, when they defeated the Buffalo Bills. It had been 405 days since Miami had defeated a winning team before Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Germany.
We can now make that 406 days after Kansas City defeated Miami 21-14. The Dolphins have now dropped seven consecutive games against winning clubs.
This season, the Dolphins are 6-0 versus teams with.500 or worse records. They have a 0-3 record against winning clubs. In wins, they averaged roughly 39 points per game and only 17 in losses.
All of these are negative indicators for Mike McDaniel’s team. Good teams, particularly title contenders, find ways to beat good opponents. For the past two seasons, the Dolphins have been unable to do so.
Tyreek Hill made a costly error on Sunday that put the Dolphins in a hole (see the video here). However, that was far from the only concern. When facing good teams, Miami has had many of them, like it did against Kansas City.
