INJURY UPDATE: Kirby Smart provides injury update on Georgia receiver

The Bulldogs’ head coach discusses the junior wide receiver, who saw limited action against Tennessee on Saturday.
Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey has had several injuries this season, the most recent of which limited him in Georgia’s Week 12 game against No. 18 Tennessee. Despite not being able to do much against the Volunteers, head coach Kirby Smart stated on Monday that McConkey is not a cause for concern moving forward.

McConkey was able to practice briefly last week after injuring his ankle against Ole Miss and having the injury bother him in Knoxville, according to Smart. However, Smart stated that there is no concern about McConkey requiring tightrope surgery, which several Bulldogs have had this season.

“He’s got a tweaked ankle from the game here at home.” He was able to go for a short time at the end of the week, but he didn’t get much practice in. “It bothered him a little bit on Saturday, but nothing too serious,” Smart said. “We’ve had an MRI since the game and are doing additional testing.” We are confident that he will be able to return. Prior to my arrival, Claude [Felton] stated that there were concerns about tightrope surgery, but this is not the case. “I’m not sure where that’s coming from.”

McConkey saw limited action against Tennessee on Saturday, finishing with no receptions on six snaps. McConkey suffered an ankle injury last week, according to Smart, and was limited in the days leading up to the Bulldogs’ game against the Volunteers.

“We thought he’d be able to go, but he was not really able to go,” Smart said on Saturday. “He tried and got out there in warm-ups, but he didn’t do much.”

Injury has hampered McConkey’s junior season significantly. McConkey suffered a back injury during fall camp, forcing him to miss the Bulldogs’ first four games of the season. He returned from injury against Auburn in Week 5, recording four receptions for 38 yards in the Bulldogs’ 27-20 victory.

“For what he practiced, I thought we got way more out of him today,” Smart said after the Bulldogs defeated the Tigers. “You know, I’m worried about him getting rusty. He exudes confidence. He played well in this stadium the last time we were here, and he made some big plays today.”

McConkey stepped up big in the following weeks, especially when tight end Brock Bowers was out with an ankle injury. McConkey has 26 receptions for 418 yards and two touchdowns in seven games.Ladd McConkey Injury: Star Wide Receiver Misses Second Game for Georgia Football - Sports Illustrated Georgia Bulldogs News, Analysis and More
