Former Alabama star has surprising CFP rankings take

“Putting Bama in over Texas would be doing the college football world a disservice.”
Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy is remembered fondly by Crimson Tide fans for his time with the program. That may change after he explains why his former program should not be included in the College Football Playoff, particularly over the Texas Longhorns.

Alabama has looked fantastic as the season has progressed. However, their one loss this season to Texas, a fellow CFP contender, could be a major stumbling block in their postseason plans.

McElroy, who is now an ESPN college football analyst, discussed Alabama’s chances of making the College Football Playoff, stating that he believes Texas should earn a spot over Alabama due to their head-to-head victory.

“Texas defeated Alabama,” McElroy said via Alabama beat writer Mike Rodak. “The outcomes must be significant. We must respect the outcomes. If the committee sets a precedent by selecting Alabama over Texas, it will be doing the college football world a disservice. It certainly would. You have to acknowledge the regular season, and putting Alabama ahead of Texas would imply that the regular season is unimportant, which is not a precedent you want to set.”Former Alabama QB Greg McElroy to Join SEC Network | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors | Bleacher Report

McElroy, as an analyst, must now be objective. However, some Alabama fans were not pleased with his assessment of the Tide’s chances in the College Football Playoff.

When comparing the two teams, Alabama’s head-to-head loss to Texas certainly stands out. However, Alabama will have one more chance to make a huge statement in order to qualify for the College Football Playoff, which some argue Texas simply cannot match.

The SEC Championship game will be played between Alabama and Georgia. If they go on to defeat them in that game, most fans, perhaps even McElroy, would be hard-pressed not to choose them over a team like Texas in the College Football Playoff.
