The writing is clearly on the wall for Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera, who knows his job is on the line over the next six games and believes he won’t be able to save it by the end of the season.
When the Washington Commanders hired Ron Rivera prior to the 2020 season, the hope was that he could bring some of the winning culture he established with the Carolina Panthers during his three seasons as head coach, including a trip to the Super Bowl in 2015. That has not been the case in his first three and a half seasons in Washington.

While Rivera was given the opportunity to help shape a new culture during the first two seasons, the stakes had risen by the third. There was hope that the official turnaround of the team’s fortunes had begun when the team finished with an 8-8-1 record and was in the playoff hunt late in the 2022 season. This season, however, they have taken a step back.
The Washington Commanders have a 4-7 record in 2023.
The Commanders enter Week 12 with a 4-7 record and one winnable game remaining on a schedule that includes games against the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, and San Francisco 49ers. Unsurprisingly, there has been a lot of talk in recent weeks about the organization’s new ownership group ending the Rivera era and hiring their first head coach in 2024.
It appears that not only those within the organization believe a head coach change is imminent at the end of the year. After the team’s frustrating Week 11 loss to the struggling New York Giants, ESPN Washington Commanders reporter John Keim revealed on Tuesday that “players are aware of the situation [with Rivera’s future], with one saying privately that they’re aware Rivera’s job status is on the line — and trending poorly.”
