Mike Tomlin, the Steelers’ once-untouchable coach who never had a losing season in Pittsburgh, is facing a backlash.
Following the Texans’ 30-6 thrashing, angry callers across the 412-area code have flooded sports talk shows with demands for Tomlin’s firing.
Some say he’s missed out on the game. And, despite promising changes following Pittsburgh’s dismal performance in Texas, Tomlin kept his oblivious offensive coordinator, Matt Canada.
This is treason in Steelers Nation, which has called for Canada’s dismissal. And it’s Tomlin’s obstinate adherence to the status quo that has engulfed him in an all-out Steelers Nation revolt. And he has become the new target.

To be honest, the Steelers’ issues extend far beyond their beleaguered coordinator. Second-year quarterback Kenny Pickett, once dubbed “Pittsburgh’s Prodigal Son,” has struggled in the pocket. Pickett’s proclivity for rolling out right into pass rush pressure is being blamed for the majority of his sacks, not his still-overmatched offensive line.
Pickett has yet to be ruled out of Sunday’s game in front of a sure-to-be-raucous crowd at acrimonious Acrisure Stadium, where the rival Ravens will come calling – and crowing.
Mitch Trubisky is waiting in the wings for his next start. He’s hoping to kickstart the so-called Canadian attack, which has been firing like a pop gun so far this season.
Will Pickett return to the pocket this Sunday?
If Kenny Pickett does not play this week, I will be concerned. Because that tells me the Steelers are concerned about more than just a bone bruise. It will be a sign that they believe he requires a mental break. Or some sort of restart. That is concerning.
