Andros Townsend shares new unfortunate message on Everton relegation

Former Everton star Andros Townsend has admitted that he isn’t surprised by the Toffees’ recent form, suggesting that Sean Dyche’s side were always going to begin to flourish.

The Toffees moved four points clear of the bottom three with a 2-0 win over Chelsea at Goodison Park on Sunday 10 December, having plunged into the relegation zone following a 10-point deduction for breaching profit and sustainability rules.

While Townsend admitted that is unfortunate from a Luton Town perspective to see Dyche’s side do so well in recent weeks, he believes that they’ll avoid the drop this season labelling them as a “top-half team”.

Speaking on talkSPORT (11 December, 9:27) he said: “I’m not surprised they’re doing that well because I know Sean Dyche as a manager, he’s a brilliant manager and he gets his teams organised. What he has got now at Everton is the quality as well.

“I know they started poorly but speaking to people at the club, they were quietly confident that once Jack Harrison got fit, once they got Dominic Calvert-Lewin fit, once they got Jarrad Branthwaite into the team, they were going to start flourishing.

“Unfortunately as a Luton player now, it’s tough to see Everton doing so well and pulling away from the dropzone, but like you said, without that 10-point deduction they’re a top-half team and they’re playing like it at the minute.”

Had that point deduction not been awarded, Everton would be sitting pretty in the top half of the table and talk of potential relegation would have long been quiet. Hopefully, that’ll be the case regardless of whether the Toffees maintain this recent excellent form.

It may be unfortunate for Townsend in terms of how it impacts his new club Luton, but you would imagine behind that initial frustration he is happy to see his old club overcome adversity and will just hope that it doesn’t prove to be damaging for his own club.
