Arsenal are reportedly plotting a fresh attempt to sign Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz this summer.
The Gunners attempted to lure the Brazilian to the Emirates Stadium at the end of the 2022 summer transfer window. Three bids were turned down by their Premier League rivals on Deadline Day, including a final £25million offer.
There had been hope that Mikel Arteta’s men could sign the midfielder in January ahead of the expiry of his contract this summer, but Luiz signed a new long-term contract at Villa Park in October to seemingly put an end to the saga.
However, The Sun are now reporting that Arsenal will battle with north London rivals Tottenham for the signing of Luiz this summer as both aim to bolster their midfield options.
Arteta has already signed Declan Rice and Kai Havertz this summer for a combined fee of £170million, though with the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Thomas Partey’s future at the club, replacements are being sounded out.
The report suggests that Spurs will target Luiz should Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg leave the club. Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich are two clubs who have been linked with the Denmark international, though no formal bid has been submitted.
Luiz, who is valued at £25million by CIES Football Observatory, helped Villa return to European football for the first time since 2010 last season following Unai Emery’s superb turnaround at the club. The Midlands outfit will play in the UEFA Europa Conference League and have already been busy themselves in the market.
