West Brom pocket unspoken bonus from £160m FIFA

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Brom columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns...

West Brom were one of many clubs to benefit from the £160million cash pot, taking home £130,000 for players representing their countries on the biggest stage.

The finance expert admitted that the Baggies will take it given their financial situation right now, despite the bonus being mainly unspoken about.

“It’s one of those little bonuses that often people don’t really mention,” he exclusively told

“A lot of people weren’t even aware that this was even a thing but now there are a lot of figures doing the rounds during the World Cup and that has been confirmed now.

That is just one of those bonuses that you take, it’s not something you can always budget for as you don’t know which players will be in the squad.

It’s absolutely a case of a little bonus along the way and you take whatever you can from that pot.”

With Guochuan Lai looking for a way out through a takeover of the club, this could be the last windfall that comes into the club before he gets his exit.

Time will tell how the future of the club will look, this is just a tiny bonus.
