Report: Newcastle will have to pay £45m to sign 23-year-old who’s ‘perfect’ for them

Newcastle United will need to take their summer spending towards £150million if they are to sign Conor Gallagher this summer.

The Magpies have already broke the bank twice ahead of the new season. Sandro Tonali became the club’s second most expensive signing ever at £55million, and he has been followed by the £38million arrival of Harvey Barnes.

On top of that, Yankuba Minteh joined Newcastle for around £6million, but he is one for the future.

In total, Newcastle have spent around £100million on new recruits, and Eddie Howe is still looking for further improvements. He wants to boost his defensive options, while it was previously reported he wanted another midfielder after Tonali.

Gallagher is an option, and he is someone who Howe really likes. And in the eyes of pundit Ally McCoist, he would be ‘perfect’ for the Magpies.

However, it feels like the England international’s lofty price tag will rule out any chance of Gallagher swapping Stamford Bridge for St James’ Park.

Chelsea reject West Ham’s Conor Gallagher bid

That is because West Ham have made their opening bid for Gallagher. According to the Times, they have proposed a deal worth £42million for the 23-year-old.

However, that bid has been rejected by Chelsea, who value Gallagher at around £45million.

The Hammers are only £3million away from a deal, but the Times add that David Moyes’ side will not be increasing their offer.

But with Chelsea looking to receive a fee of over £40million, it is hard to imagine Newcastle making a move. It was previously claimed that the Magpies only wanted a loan move, while it has also been reported that they only value Gallagher at £25million.

It looks like this will culminate in Gallagher not signing for Newcastle, which probably won’t disappoint too many supporters. Our midfield already looks pretty stacked without Gallagher.

West Ham need him much more, so it will be interesting to see if a compromise can be agreed.
