Leeds United could be set for Karl Darlow bargain amid Newcastle “verbal agreement” – Sky Sports

Leeds United may not be paying a hefty fee to bring Karl Darlow to West Yorkshire from Newcastle United this summer, as they bid to strengthen in goal.

Leeds are gearing up for their third pre-season friendly in front of fans tomorrow as they take on Premier League opposition in Nottingham Forest.

The Reds present another solid test for Daniel Farke’s men as they prepare for the start of the Championship season in a week-and-a-half’s time.

Karl Darlow to Leeds?

Leeds look to be nearing their second signing of the summer window in the shape of Newcastle’s Karl Darlow, with Fabrizio Romano sharing this morning that the Whites have reached a verbal agreement to sign him.

Darlow travelled for pre-season with the Magpies in the US, but will be permitted to travel back to tie up a move to LS11.

Romano claims Leeds are “almost there” when it comes to signing Darlow, as they wait to clarify final details on the matter.

How much will he cost?

A £5million fee has been bandied around in the last few weeks as Leeds battled with Bournemouth for his signature, but it looks as though Leeds are not paying nearly that much.

That’s according to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, who responded to a Newcastle fan’s comment hoping the fee would be “in the millions”:

If we have managed to keep this fee down below £2million, then we have pulled a blinder to get Darlow in that cheap.

There’s no avoiding that we could have made a more ambitious signing than Darlow, but we know we’re getting a top-end Championship goalkeeper, which is exactly what we needed.

He will come straight into the side and likely displace Illan Meslier, and his exit could bring in an eight-figure sum that sets us up nicely elsewhere.
