Tony Mowbray has issued an update on in-demand winger Jack Clarke as interest persists in the Sunderland attacker.
Clarke, 22, played in 47 Championship games for Sunderland last season. The former Tottenham Hotspur man contributed to 21 goals in the league and helped Sunderland reach a top six finish against all odds.
Clarke joined the Black Cats half way through their League One promotion campaign and despite it being a league below he never hit his full potential with the youngster only managing one goal and four assists in the third tier.
Tony Mowbray kept faith in him though and after Alex Neil’s departure Clarke found himself central to many of Sunderland’s attacks.
Interest in the York-born winger has been consistent this summer. Premier League side Burnley have submitted four bids now with the latest reports suggesting Clarke is becoming unsettled.
However, speaking to the Sunderland Echo, boss Mowbray has claimed the Clarets are looking at other options and not currently pursuing a deal for Clarke. He said:
“If I’m sitting here being honest, I don’t think it’s been anywhere near a level [where we might have to do a deal].
“But I’d have to say that it feels to me as if Burnley have been moving away and are looking at other options, choices. As far as I can see they were testing the water and as far as I’m concerned, the right decision has been made. You can see right through pre-season that Jack Clarke is ultra confident at the moment, right at the top of his game. Hopefully he has more goals and assists in his boots for Sunderland this season.”
The Sunderland Echo go onto claim Clarke’s stance remains unchanged with the winger in no rush to leave.
