Newcastle United remain undeterred in their pursuit of Tino Livramento despite Southampton continuing to drive a hard bargain for their top talent this summer. The Saints have stood firm over their valuation of the 20-year-old, which is close to £40m, but Newcastle are currently unwilling to match those demands after spending just shy of £100m on Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes earlier this summer.

Extra cover in the full-back department remains the priority for Eddie Howe after bolstering both his midfield and attack – and negotiations continue over a deal for Livramento. Newcastle are poised to return with an improved offer in the coming days to once again test Southampton’s resolve.

Newcastle supporters, all of whom are eager for transfer news, will likely know more about how close a St Mary’s exit is by Friday evening as Southampton kick off their Championship season against Sheffield Wednesday. Whispers began circulating on Thursday regarding Livramento not travelling to Hillsborough for the campaigner opener.

Southampton have also knocked back offers for Romeo Lavia and James Ward-Prowse as they refuse to be bounced by top flight sides. New boss Russell Martin has continuously stressed he is in no mood to lose his best players before the end of the summer window.

“Hopefully we can keep hold of a few who are attracting real interest, but we have to be realistic as well and accept the situation that a few might have to go to help us then get a few players in that we really want to help us,” he told talkSPORT this week.
