Matheus Nunes was considered a coup despite his high fee when he joined Wolves last summer, fans are finally beginning to see why.
The Portugal international had been credited with interest from some of Europes elite prior to his Molineux move.
However choosing Wolves he arrived with high expectations which last season at least, he struggled to live up to.
This is likely due in the main to Wolves’ struggles as a whole, but a player with such quality should really be performing to a higher level.
Now with his first season in the books, many assumed he would be now ready to kick on ahead of his second year as a Old Gold star.
With pre-season in the books, he seems to quietly be reaching the level we all know he can.
Nunes starting to prove his value
Nunes’ at the time club record fee of £38m left unfair instant expectations on the star who was described by his former teammate as “unbelievable”.
The Portuguese midfielder has shown encouraging signs through pre-season which saw him a constant threat.
Against Rennes he played all over the place, starting on the left during the first-half and then switched to the right.
It was from the right that he helped set up both second half goals for Wolves.
These came much to the benefit of Joao Gomes and Hee Chan-Hwang who finished Nunes’ creative play.
Can he continue?
Yes it is quite a jump to assume he is now playing at a high level following some pre-season games.
And it could be quite the opposite come next Monday with the visit to Old Trafford against what will be a strong and confident United side.
However ignoring that and remaining positive, his performances are giving Wolves fans so much to be excited about.
If Julen Lopetegui is to have a successful season, it is hard to imagine this man not playing a crucial role.
