Manchester United are focusing on player exits in the coming weeks as boss Erik ten Hag wants to reduce the quantity of his squad while generating more money for incomings
Manchester United are prioritising player sales in the coming weeks as Erik ten Hag looks to slim down his bloated squad.
Ten Hag has overseen a relatively fruitful summer transfer to date; securing the transfers of goalkeeper Andre Onana, striker Rasmus Hojlund and attacking midfielder Mason Mount. After a notable transfer spend, the club’s focus is to attain transfer funds and reduce their wage bill.
United have only secured transfer fees for Anthony Elanga and Alex Telles, who have joined Nottingham Forest and Al-Nassr respectively. David de Gea, Jack Butland, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe have also left, with the loan deals of Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer expiring.
Further additions to United’s squad are expected; a backup goalkeeper is expected to join after Zion Suzuki rejected the opportunity to join from Urawa Red Diamonds. The club are also keen on a deal for Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat and a new central defender.
However, those arrivals depend on departures. Dean Henderson is keen for an Old Trafford exit, although it is now unclear if Nottingham Forest will make a move following his loan with Matt Turner set to join the City Ground from Arsenal.
United will listen to offers for Henderson but further exits are expected. Eric Bailly, who has returned to the club from Marseille, has not returned to first-team training yet and will be moved on permanently – with interest from Saudi Arabia and Fulham.
There is a similar level of interest in midfielder Fred, who will also depart after the arrival of Mount from Chelsea. United hope to gain a £20million transfer fee for the Brazil international, who joined from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018.
