As Michael Beale knocks back Rangers links to Harry Souttar and Zak Vyner, reports surrounding Millwall’s Jake Cooper continue to go unanswered.
Whilst the Rangers boss just might not have gotten around to swatting away suggestions that Rangers could reignite interest in Cooper, historic links to the towering centre-back have got fans listening.
Back during the reign of Steven Gerrard, when Michael Beale was the former Ibrox gaffer’s right-hand man, Jake Cooper was reportedly the subject of a rejected £3m bid.
Fast forward five years and suddenly the now 28-year-old 6ft6 Millwall stopper is reportedly back on the Gers’ radar with Michael Beale admitting a defender is on his summer shopping list.
The Ibrox manager has already got several defensive options in the squad, but that left-sided centre-back slot has proven troublesome and high profile interest in Auston Trusty and Jonathan Panzo has already came and went.
Rangers transfer silence golden over Jake Cooper?
Given those historic Rangers links to left-sided centre-back Jake Cooper, it could either be a lazy link or genuine interest and as the transfer window heads towards its final fortnight the situation is intriguing.
Out of contract next summer, it’s sell now or potentially lose for nothing for Millwall and it could have them up against it should Rangers make any interest concrete.
Couple this with Michael Beale having already denied any interest in Leicester City defender Harry Souttar or Bristol City centre-half Zak Vyner, and suddenly Jake Cooper appears the only Rangers link left doing the rounds.
Whilst we’ve no insider information to suggest that a deal for Jake Cooper is likely in this window, as far as Rangers’ interest goes you can see why some might see the club’s transfer silence as golden.
Jake Cooper came through the youth ranks at Reading before joining Millwall in 2017, going on to make over 300 appearance as the Den, scoring 22 goals and registering an impressive 17 assists.
