In the latest in our ongoing series, the focus on one of our former players falls on Sandy Davie.
Now I make no apologies for a goalkeeper having been chosen again, after all, previously in this series, I may have remarked, once or twice, that it was the position I filled, at school, until the lure of a paid paper round derailed those ambitions.
Sandy Davie, born in Dundee, spent a huge slice of career with Dundee United before moving to Kenilworth Road in October 1968 for a fee of around £8000.
While at Luton Town he made an immediate impression keeping 11 clean sheets in 27 appearances.
However, an injury ended his season prematurely at Easter, the victim of a challenge involving a Southport forward.
Returning, following his injury, the following season, Sandy attracted the attention of several clubs, including Southampton, whom he joined for a fee of £12000, a small profit for the Hatters.
But, whilst at the Dell, Sandy found appearances hard to come by, courtesy of Eric Martin being the first choice keeper, in fact he was to make just the solitary start against Manchester United, in a game Southampton were to lose.
Soon after, in 1972, Sandy returned to his home town club, Dundee United, before emigratng to New Zealand for whom he played for at international level.
Looking at the statistics, during his time with Luton Town, Sandy made 58 League appearances but his skills, between the posts, endeared him to the Hatters support.
