Latest Coventry City news from Coventry Live includes Mark Robins on his pursuit of new signings
Mark Robins is targeting four fresh faces for Coventry City before the end of the transfer window.
The Sky Blues have already bagged nine new players this summer and Robins is armed with a bumper transfer war-chest after the big money departures of Viktor Gyokeres and Gustavo Hamer.
Ellis Simms and Haji Wright have arrived to replace Gyokeres, but Hamer’s £15million switch to Sheffield United has left a hole in Coventry’s midfield. It could be plugged by the return of Callum O’Hare, although Robins is reluctant to put a timeframe on his comeback after eight months out with a serious knee injury.
Coventry could even dip into the loan market to find solutions after utilising it to great effect last term with six signings. Man City’s Callum Doyle, now at Leicester City, was among them and appeared 44 times in the Championship during the Sky Blues’ 2022/23 campaign.
“All options are open to us, it just comes down to what the best scenario is for us,” said Robins. “There’s only a couple of weeks left so we need to be methodical as we always are and continue to trust the process.
“I know exactly what we need to do. I’ve built five teams while I’ve been here. I just want to get on with things. When people drop or there’s a scenario, I can see how it’s going to affect the side. One player coming in is OK, but the other player coming in has to make sense as well. You have to make sense of what you’ve already got in the building. It’s got to compliment, it’s got to put people under pressure, and drive the standard and the quality.
“The recruitment department are working incredibly hard. We’ve got to try and get those over the line. I’m looking for four players, I’ve not made any secret about that.
“We’re still looking to add players. We need that because we need the depth. We’ve just got to make sure we bring the right people in to contribute to that.”
Coventry are two games into the gruelling 46-game Championship slog, or 49 games if they reach the play-off final as the Sky Blues did last term. Robins knows only too well that a big squad is required to cope with the inevitable injuries and suspensions that will arise over the course of the next nine months.
“It’s taking longer than I would like, I’d have liked them in four or five weeks ago,” he added. “It’s not an ideal world, I still need numbers but I need quality as well. We need that to assist us in what is a difficult and relentless Championship.
“I know that I’ve got significant players coming back in Callum (O’Hare) and Fabio (Tavares) and that’s something we are looking forward to. But I still need the extra numbers to cover injuries and make everyone else up their game.”
