A gift in disguise; Tottenham star’s refusal of a Premier League move have an impact on Leeds’ pursuit

Leeds United are surprisingly pursuing a move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Jonjo Shelvey as per a new report – but Tottenham star Tanguy Ndombele is set to reject Forest, so could it hamper our move?

TeamTalk reported on Monday that Leeds were showing interest in Shelvey. Indeed, the club are said to have asked Forest about the six-time England man. He is said to have had a bust-up with Steve Cooper.

Indeed, Shelvey only joined Forest in January from Newcastle – playing eight times. But, he has failed to be a part of the matchday squad in each of Forest’s two games, against Arsenal and Sheffield United.

So, Leeds were set to make a move. However, Shelvey is hardly the kind of player that would excite our fans. Ethan Ampadu is starring in his role as the midfield anchor – the position that Shelvey likes to play.Explained: Why Jonjo Shelvey was told to 'stay at home' for Nottingham Forest's defeat to Liverpool | Goal.com Nigeria

Could Ndombele hamper Leeds move for Forest player Shelvey

While Leeds need midfielders – do we need Shelvey? Arguably not. Now, a move for Shelvey could be placed in doubt with Forest failing to strike a deal for Ndombele. The Spurs star is set to leave the club.

Last season, he won Serie A with Napoli. But GFFN say that Forest’s move to sign Ndombele has been turned down by the player, who does not believe in the project. Forest are likely to re-enter the market.

But, for now, it might mean that Forest will want to keep hold of Shelvey until a replacement is brought to the City Ground. Ndombele also has offers from Turkish clubs, and a return to France with Rennes.Ndombele returns to Lyon as midfielder signs on loan from Tottenham until end of season | Goal.com

A move for Shelvey would have been a questionable one. Leeds do not need him massively, and he is past his best at 31. Forest’s failed move for Ndombele might have ended our Shelvey pursuit, anyway.
