Report Wolves: Journalist gives update on a famous ace and his mysterious absence

There is currently a bit of mystery surrounding Daniel Podence at Wolves – and a journalist has now shed a bit of light on the situation.

Podence has not played in a game for Wolves since May 20, which was the final home game of 2022/23 against Everton.

Podence was not with the squad for pre-season, although Julen Lopetegui had him back on the bench for the friendly with Rennes

Gary O’Neil came in as Lopetegui’s replacement, but there has been no sign of the Portuguese in Wolves’ first two games.

He’s not been picked in the squad, and after the defeat to Brighton O’Neil said that the club were managing the situation, and that he was focusing on players in the squad.

It was a coy answer that said a lot at the same time

And now, Liam Keen has shed a bit of light on what’s been happening.

Daniel Podence has been training with the U21s at Wolves

Podence came up on the latest Express & Star podcast.

Journalist Liam Keen shared what he currently knows of the Podence situation, after some people had suggested he had been back in Portugal.

Keen said: “He’s made it very clear he wants to go. Wolves have been open to selling him and they’ve not been able to have anything serious from a club to take him off their hands at the moment. That’s the problem, he’s stuck in limbo.

“He wasn’t training with the team under Lopetegui. He didn’t go out to Portugal. O’Neil came in and brought him back in to train with the first-team. Within a few days he’s back training with the U21s again. There’s a common denominator here and unfortunately it’s Daniel Podence.

The situation is… there’s been rumours he’s been going back to Portugal. The players were back in Monday, they had Sunday off. I don’t believe Podence was back at Compton on Monday. But I am told he was back today (on Tuesday).

“From what I can find out and what it seems to me, is that he’s been going back to Portugal at the weekends fairly regularly. Because he’s not involved with the first-team. (He) doesn’t want to come and watch the games and has been going back to his homeland. For me it’s a matter of time before he moves on.”

It was reported last week that Celtic were keen on the 27-year-old.

Wolves need shut of Daniel Podence

The worst outcome now is that Wolves don’t get Podence out of the club.

There is enough struggle at the club right now, and Wolves do not need to be dealing with a ‘situation’.

It’s frustrating because Wolves need money that his sale could bring in.

Seemingly though, suitable offers have not yet been forthcoming.

It could very well transpire that Wolves take a lot less than the reported £12 million they are asking for, just to get shut of him.

He’s only got a year left on his contract which is why Wolves are open to a sale.
