Many of us are probably familiar with the SuperSport channel from South Africa thanks to its extensive coverage of Premier League games on a weekend (wink wink).
SuperSport has been all over social media in the past 24 hours for another reason, though, thanks to a TikTok video of World Cup-winning French defender Marcel Desailly being grilled with quickfire questions by host Manish Bhasin.
The former AC Milan and Chelsea centre-back, who lifted the World Cup trophy in 1998 with our very own Stéphane Guivarc’h, was asked two questions that led to him discussing Newcastle United: [1] “Best Premier League stadium you played in?” and [2] “Toughest striker you’ve played against?”
Desailly was unequivocal in his responses, first commenting “St. James’ Park. I like this stadium at Newcastle. It’s quite scary. At the time they were having a good crowd, good fans, all the time I feared St. James’ Park.”
When probed about his toughest opponent, Desailly’s face lit up as he said “I hated playing against Alan Shearer, yes! The English best goalscorer, is he still the one? He’s lucky that Harry Kane left!”
You can see the video in question courtesy of Newcastle Fans TV below, via the SuperSport TikTok channel:
And you’ll forgive us for a little reminder of one of Shearer’s best moments against Desailly from the final home game of the 2003/04 season:
