West Brom winger Jeremy Sarmiento scored his first goal after moving to Albion on loan earlier this summer but Carlos Corberan wants more from him
Jeremy Sarmiento has much still to improve in his game despite impressing supporters with his first ever senior goal against Middlesbrough at the weekend – but West Brom boss Carlos Corberan is encouraged by the winger’s willingness to address his deficiencies and use his loan spell to make himself a more complete player.
Sarmiento is only 21 and is set to spend the season on loan at Albion from Premier League Brighton. It was his fifth appearance in an Albion shirt on Saturday, but all appearances to date have been cameos from the bench and, for now at least, captain Jed Wallace, playmaker John Swift and utility man Matt Phillips are keeping him out of the team.
While many fans, quite understandably, wish to see a little more of the exciting and skillful Sarmiento and await the day he is named in the starting XI at 2pm on a Saturday, but Corberan – even taking into account Sarmiento’s excellent late finish which was met with an enormous collective sigh of relief around The Hawthorns – sees plenty for the Ecuadorian to work on.
Indeed he feels that the goal itself, which has arrived early into his spell at The Hawthorns, can act as a springboard for Sarmiento, who he has been pleased with the mentality of and with who he intends on working alongside to better his condition in order to best prepare him for the rigours of the Championship.
“Jeremy scored a very good goal in a poor game from him in terms of performance. I still don’t see the player I want to see,” Corberan said honestly. “He knows, and he’ll be focused to improve, but the goal for me can bring confidence sometimes the player needs. I liked that the team, with [Nathaniel] Chalobah in the pitch, kept finding ways to show personality and to react with a magic goal that Sarmiento scored. In the previous actions…he didn’t start well the game, but he finished better the game.
