Club-record £100m departure turned down

Newcastle faced interest for one of their star performers in the closing days of the transfer window

Newcastle United overcame a late battle to keep hold of one of their star players with Liverpool making a blockbuster bid for a midfielder, according to reports from AS.

The Reds were desperate to strengthen their midfield options this summer after the losses of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and James Milner, as Jurgen Klopp looks to propel his side back into Europe’s elite competition.

The Merseyside giants are believed to be huge admirers of Bruno Guimaraes who played a defining role in Newcastle’s road to the Champions League and the Carabao Cup final.

Guimaraes also played a key role in helping his team to survive in the Premier League when he first arrived at SJP from Lyon for £33m back in January 2022.

The midfielder has been an ever present in the Newcastle success story under the guidance of Eddie Howe and he even represented his country at the 2022 World Cup.

The Reds were keen to land the Brazilian after missing out on the likes of Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo who both rejected Liverpool in favour of a move to Chelsea.

Guimaraes was a top target and Liverpool even registered a club-record bid of £100m for the player, which surpassed their existing record fee of £75m for Virgil Van Dijk.

However, the player remains a key part of Eddie Howe’s team at Newcastle who quickly rejected any approach for the player.

The 25-year-old appears to be committed to life in the North East and he has started all of his sides matches so far this season.

Guimaraes recently shared a post on social media which celebrates his wife’s pregnancy as the pair prepare to welcome a second child to their home.

Guimaraes posted: “How we dream about this moment more! Increasing our family & our happiness! Thank you my God for all the blessing and accomplishments.”
