Aston Villa player ratings vs Chelsea as Martinez, Kamara and Zaniolo shine in big win

Following Unai Emery’s team’s victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, BirminghamLive brings you the most recent Aston Villa news.

Aston Villa defeated Mauricio Pochettino’s team 1-0 at Stamford Bridge this afternoon to win their second straight Premier League match against Chelsea for the first time in thirty years.

After the hosts were reduced to 10 men around the hour mark, Ollie Watkins scored his first Premier League goal of the season. After a VAR review, Malo Gusto was dismissed for a reckless foul after tackling Lucas Digne.

With equally spectacular efforts, Digne and Nicolo Zaniolo came the closest to Villa breaking the score in the first half. After being set up by Mykhailo Mudryk, Nicolas Jackson could have given Chelsea the lead in the 25th minute, but Emi Martinez stopped him from scoring from close range.

Raheem Sterling nearly gave Chelsea the lead early in the second half by pushing the pace. The winger managed to sneak up on Digne, but Martinez blocked his shot at a close angle.

Martinez missed his line a few minutes later, denying Sterling once more. The England star broke through on goal but was stopped by Martinez, who extended his leg to preserve his perfect record.

With 15 minutes remaining at the Bridge, Villa took full advantage of Martinez’s superb goalkeeping to break the tie. When Moussa Diaby and Watkins combined for a spectacular counterattack, the Villa striker scored his first league goal in front of the visiting crowd.

Under Emery, Villa are unbeaten in all five Premier League games played in London, while Mauricio Pochettino suffered his first loss to Villa in five encounters overall.
