Burnley are poised to be without forward Johann Berg Gudmundsson in the EFL Cup on Tuesday after he was pulled off early in the loss to Manchester United.
The 32-year-old started the game for the Red Devils on the right side of the offensive trio behind striker Zeki Amdouni, who scored in the Clarets’ previous meeting against Nottingham Forest.
Gudmundsson was beginning his fourth consecutive game for Burnley at the start of the 2023-24 season, having played from the start in Premier League matches against Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest earlier in the month.
After a bright start for the hosts at Turf Moor, Gudmundsson was pulled off after only 18 minutes, and was replaced by Genk loanee Mike Tresor.
In his post-match press conference, Burnley manager Vincent Kompany delivered an update on the midfielder’s fitness, and the Belgian expressed hope that the issue would not keep him without the player for too long.
“I hope it’s just cramp or a little tiredness in his muscle,” Kompany said after the full-time whistle in Lancashire when asked about Gudmundsson’s issue.
Although the Burnley manager did not specify the nature of the injury, it is thought that the 32-year-old had strapping put on his left calf as he sat on the bench with his teammates for the remainder of the game.
The rest of the game in Lancashire saw the hosts dominate possession but come up short owing to a moment of brilliance from Bruno Fernandes, who fizzed a controlled volley past James Trafford from a long-range Jonny Evans ball.
Gudmundsson is scheduled to miss his team’s trip to Salford City in November.
As the Clarets try to earn a place in the final 16 of the competition, Jacob Bruun Larsen and Jay Rodriguez could be given starts in the cup clash at The Peninsula Stadium.
In the Premier League, Burnley are 19th in the standings after five games, having gained just one point since their promotion from the Championship.
It’s unclear whether Gudmundsson will be available when the Clarets travel to Newcastle United in the league next Saturday, with Eddie Howe’s Magpies coming off an 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
The Iceland international joined Turf Moor from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2016 and has since appeared in a number of games.
